Artificial Light

Surf flash photography isn't a new thing. flame was using flash in the early 80's. Tom Carey took it to the next level in the late 90's and into the new century. When i first got bit by the camera bug, i was obsessed with capturing the action with flash. the success rate is very low, but that makes even more rewarding when you do nail one. 5 moments of artificial light for your enjoyment...

chris frohoff

I ran into chris frohoff the other day. He is a fireman now, but in the 80's he was a top asp surfer. Chris made the finals of the pipe masters in 86. That makes for good stories to tell your grandkids when you get old

Canada Tribe

Surfers are a tribal bunch. They have a code of travel that dates back to the early 1900’s. Surfers were often viewed as sub culture back then ( and up till the 90’s), they often banded into groups according to regions that they lived in.
A traveling code for surfers soon developed. You would lend your couch to a surfer from a different region in hopes that your next surf trip in to their region would be payed back in full, with a spot on a floor, an extra bed, and passing the wine.

This code is still alive to day. Ralph Bruhwiler came by for a pit stop crash on the couch on his way back to canada. He was on a surf trip in mexico, surfing some secret spots that cant be mention.

So next time im in canada and need a place to crash, i can ring him up and get a spot on the floor for some needed rest. see video below about the bears on the beach

Scanners part 2 (pier pressure)

thanks to the turner family for the slides

here is an article from the times on the subject

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The past decade has not been kind to Orange County's piers

The now-abandoned Huntington Beach Pier stands as a testament to the destructiveness
of several storms in the 1980s that mercilessly battered those sturdy platforms of wood, cement and steel that stretch into the Pacific.

During a pounding by 30-foot waves two years ago, a 250-foot portion of the concrete pier was torn off and the rest so badly weakened that it was closed. The pier will finally be dismantled in the fall.

The 1988 storm also inflicted damage on the Newport Beach, Balboa and San Clemente piers, but not enough to close them.

In 1986, storm damage forced the temporary closure of the Seal Beach and Huntington Beach piers for repairs.

And three years earlier, a fierce storm caused major damage to the Huntington Beach, San Clemente and Seal Beach piers, tearing off portions of the platforms and uprooting the deep pilings. All three were closed months for repairs.

Huntington Beach plans to build a new pier that should be open to the public in 1992. "If we do it right, it should last us 100 years," Deputy City Administrator Jim Palin said.

In truth, none of the county's piers have lasted anywhere near 100 years.

Each pier has undergone extensive repairs and piling and platform replacements over the years. In fact, city officials say that there are no original materials left on any of the piers except Aliso Pier, which was built in 1972.

And even Aliso Pier was closed all of last year for renovation.

"Piers are much like the human body, where all the cells die and are replaced within seven years," San Clemente Marine Safety Capt. Lynn Hughes said.
